A short history of the high heel
Heels have walked through centuries of fashion. Originally worn by Persian cavalry in the 10th century to secure their feet in stirrups, they were later adopted by European aristocracy in the 1600s — Louis XIV famously made the red-heeled shoe a symbol of status. By the 20th century, the stiletto, perfected in the 1950s by Roger Vivier and André Perugia, transformed the heel into an icon of femininity, confidence and craftsmanship. Today high heels span every shape imaginable: block, kitten, wedge, platform, cone, spool and beyond — each with its own character.
